Hydraulic conversion steps

Disconnect and remove the existing Gen B pump.
Retain the existing helm, cylinder, return hose and pressure hose routing.
Connect the existing non-pressure return hose directly to the Gen C pump.
No return-side adapter is required for this conversion.
Remove the Gen B damper hose from the pressure side.
The Gen B damper is not used with the Gen C pump.
Install conversion hose 8M0152467.
This replaces the removed damper hose and adapts the existing Gen B pressure hose to the Gen C pump.
Gen C signal conversion kit

Signal conversion kit

Install the same 8M0199050 signal conversion kit used for the single-engine Gen C setup.

Kit contents:

  • One 8M0026568 signal drive harness assembly
  • One 8M0164725 Gen C pump signal adapter

Power wiring and fuse requirements

The Gen C pump requires 80-amp circuit protection.
Do not assume the existing Gen B fuse is sufficient. Many Gen B installations use a lower-rated fuse.
Reuse the existing power setup only after verifying it has an 80-amp fuse or suitable 80-amp protection.
If the current protection is 60 amps, replace it with the correct 80-amp protection or install a new Gen C power harness.

What to verify

  • 80-amp fuse or approved equivalent protection
  • Power wiring condition and capacity
  • Clean battery and ground connections
  • Correct routing and strain relief

Automatic Power Source check for multiple engines

Multiple-engine boats must verify that the installed APS is rated for the Gen C pump’s current demand.

Replace the APS if:

  • The side schematic references a 40-amp maximum load
  • The APS part number is 895091K01
  • The APS part number is 895091K02
  • The APS part number is 895091K03
  • The APS part number is 8M0133815

Compatible APS:

8M0149746

If the installed APS is 8M0149746, it is the correct unit for this upgrade path.

Avoid these errors

Common Verado power steering setup mistakes

Leaving the Gen B damper installed during a Gen C conversion

Remove the damper and install conversion hose 8M0152467 in its place.

Assuming the existing fuse is adequate

Verify suitable 80-amp circuit protection before operating the Gen C pump.

Using an older 40-amp APS

Inspect the APS label and part number on multiple-engine installations.

Ordering pump-to-helm hoses instead of cylinder hoses

These are two separate hose groups with different functions and part-number ranges.

Connecting the pressure route to the wrong helm port

The pressure feed connects to P; the non-pressure return connects to E.

Running the pump dry while filling or bleeding

Maintain the correct fluid level throughout the process.

Skipping signal-kit selection by engine count

Fresh Gen C installations use different kits for single, twin, triple and quad-engine applications.

Assuming every Gen B installation is ready for conversion

The conversion branch is intended for a complete, functioning Gen B system.

Diagnostic starting points

Verado power steering troubleshooting guide

These checks help narrow down common steering complaints. Final diagnosis should follow the applicable Mercury service information for the exact engine and steering configuration.

No power assist

Check battery voltage, fuse or circuit protection, power harness connections, grounds, APS compatibility and the pump signal path.

Intermittent assist

Inspect loose battery connections, harness strain, corrosion, signal connectors, APS output and low-voltage conditions.

Noisy pump

Verify fluid level, look for aerated fluid, inspect the return side for air entry and confirm the system has been bled correctly.

Steering is hard in both directions

Confirm pump operation, fluid level, hose routing and that the pressure and return circuits are connected correctly.

Steering is harder in one direction

Inspect the L and R cylinder-hose routing, cylinder condition and possible trapped air at one cylinder end.

Fluid leak at the cylinder

Inspect the complete cylinder, the available seal kits and the cylinder-to-engine seal before deciding whether to rebuild or replace.

Gen C conversion does not build assist

Confirm the Gen B damper was removed, conversion hose 8M0152467 is installed, 80-amp protection is present and signal kit 8M0199050 is connected.

Multiple-engine system loses pump power

Inspect the APS label, current rating, part number, battery feeds and 80-amp fuse or breaker arrangement.
