Advanced Sleeve Yamaha Inline 4-Cylinder Replacement Sleeve

Yamaha Inline 4-Cylinder 4-Stroke Cylinder Sleeve - Advanced Sleeve 1185SC

The Advanced Sleeve 1185SC is an aftermarket replacement cylinder sleeve for compatible Yamaha inline 4-cylinder four-stroke outboard engines.

This straight cylinder sleeve has a 3.310" outside diameter, 3.118" bore, and 5.195" overall length.

Pro Marine also stocks the 1185SA version, which uses the same 3.118" bore and 5.195" length but has a smaller 3.270" outside diameter.

1185SC Outside Diameter: 3.310"

The key difference between the 1185SC and 1185SA sleeves is the outside diameter.

1185SC = 3.310" OD
1185SA = 3.270" OD

Yamaha Inline 4-Cylinder Application

The Advanced Sleeve 1185SC is designed for compatible Yamaha inline 4-cylinder four-stroke powerheads.

Cylinder sleeves are typically used during major powerhead rebuilding when the original cylinder wall is too worn, scored, corroded, damaged, or previously machined beyond the point where a normal oversize piston repair is practical.

Important Sleeve Selection Note:

The 1185SC uses the larger 3.310" outside diameter.

Do not select a cylinder sleeve only by horsepower or piston bore size. The engine block must be measured to determine the required sleeve outside diameter and machining dimensions.

If the block requires the smaller 3.270" OD, use the 1185SA sleeve linked below.

Advanced Sleeve 1185SA - 3.270" Outside Diameter

Alternate replacement sleeve for compatible Yamaha inline four-cylinder four-stroke powerheads.

Outside Diameter: 3.270"
Bore: 3.118"
Length: 5.195"

The 1185SA uses a .040" smaller outside diameter than the 1185SC while retaining the same nominal bore and length.

What a Replacement Cylinder Sleeve Does

A replacement cylinder sleeve restores the cylinder wall when the original bore is no longer suitable for normal rebuilding. The damaged cylinder area is machined to accept the replacement sleeve, allowing the block to be repaired instead of discarded.

Once installed, the sleeve is bored and honed to the correct finished size for the piston that will be used in the rebuilt engine.

When the 3.310" OD Sleeve May Be Used

The larger outside diameter of the 1185SC provides additional material for applications where the block has been machined larger, has suffered more extensive cylinder-wall damage, or requires the larger sleeve outside diameter during the repair process.

The machine shop should determine which sleeve outside diameter is appropriate after inspecting and measuring the block.

Common Reasons to Install a Cylinder Sleeve

  • Deep piston or cylinder-wall scoring
  • Broken piston or piston-ring damage
  • Severe cylinder corrosion
  • Excessive cylinder taper
  • Excessive out-of-round condition
  • Damage beyond available oversize piston dimensions
  • Previously bored cylinder requiring restoration
  • Major Yamaha powerhead rebuilding

Machine Shop Installation

Cylinder sleeve installation requires precision machining. The engine block must be measured and machined for the correct sleeve fit before installation.

After the sleeve is installed, the cylinder must be bored and honed to the proper finished dimension and piston-to-wall clearance for the piston being installed.

Standard or Oversize Piston After Sleeving?

One advantage of installing a replacement sleeve is that the machinist can finish the repaired cylinder for the piston size selected for the rebuild.

Depending on the engine, piston availability and condition of the remaining cylinders, the sleeved cylinder may be finished for a standard or compatible oversize piston.

Parts to Inspect During a Cylinder Sleeve Repair

  • Pistons and piston size
  • Piston rings
  • Finished cylinder bore
  • Piston-to-wall clearance
  • Connecting rods
  • Connecting rod bolts
  • Connecting rod bearings
  • Crankshaft main bearings
  • Crankshaft journals
  • Cylinder head and sealing surface
  • Valves and valve stem seals
  • Powerhead gaskets and seals
