What Does Type A Marine Fuel Hose Mean?
Marine fuel hose is classified according to its intended fuel-system use, permeation performance and fire-resistance requirements.
Type A hose meets the applicable marine fuel-hose performance standard and also meets the additional USCG fire-test requirement. This makes Type A hose the appropriate choice in marine installations where additional fire resistance is required.
Type A1 vs. Type A2
| Classification | General Application | Permeation Class |
|---|---|---|
| Type A1 | Fuel-feed hose, including tank-to-engine applications where Type A hose is required | Lower permeation |
| Type A2 | Certain fuel-fill and vent applications | Higher permitted permeation than Class 1 |
For marine fuel-feed hose between the fuel tank and engine, federal requirements specifically identify USCG Type A1 as the Type A fuel-feed classification.
Always confirm the exact hose marking and requirements for your particular fuel-system installation before ordering.
When Should You Choose Type A Fuel Hose?
Type A fuel hose is generally selected when the fuel line is routed through an area where the installation requires the additional USCG fire-resistant hose classification.
This commonly includes many enclosed or below-deck installations, as well as other fuel-system layouts where Type A hose is specified by the boat builder, engine manufacturer or applicable regulation.

Why Do Different 5/16" Hoses Use Different Clamps?
The 5/16" measurement describes the hose's inside diameter. It does not tell you the outside diameter.
Type A hose typically has a different construction and wall thickness than Type B or OEM hose, so its outside diameter can be larger even though all of the hoses have the same 5/16" inside diameter.
That is why the MPI 313-1 Type A hose uses the Oetiker 4-170 clamp, while the Type B hose uses 4-153 and the Mercury silver hose uses 4-145.
What This Fuel Hose is Used For
The MPI 313-1 Type A fuel hose is intended for building, repairing or replacing compatible marine fuel lines where a Type A fuel-hose classification is required.
Typical installations may include permanent marine fuel systems, enclosed routing areas and tank-to-engine applications requiring Type A1 fuel-feed hose.
