What This Fuel Pump is Used For

The low-pressure pump supplies fuel into and through the Mercury Fuel Supply Module or Vapor Separator. Its job is to keep the module supplied with enough fuel for the high-pressure portion of the EFI system.

On applications with separate low- and high-pressure pumps, the low-pressure pump does not create the final injection pressure. Instead, it keeps the reservoir supplied so the high-pressure pump can deliver the fuel pressure required by the injectors.

Common Signs of Low-Pressure Pump Problems

• Hard starting or extended cranking
• Fuel Supply Module does not stay adequately supplied with fuel
• Loss of power under acceleration
• Engine hesitation under load
• Engine runs at low RPM but loses power at higher RPM
• High-pressure pump becomes fuel-starved
• Low-pressure fuel-delivery test is below specification
• Pump fails electrical testing

Why Test Both Fuel Pumps?

A low-pressure pump problem can mimic a high-pressure pump failure. If the low-pressure side cannot keep the FSM supplied with fuel, the high-pressure pump may be unable to maintain proper pressure even if the high-pressure pump itself is operating correctly.

Diagnose fuel supply and fuel pressure before replacing parts. When the FSM is opened, inspect the other pump, wiring, electrical connectors, internal fuel passages and seals while the module is accessible.
