Many Johnson and Evinrude carbureted outboards use an electric primer solenoid instead of a traditional choke plate to provide additional fuel during cold starting.
When the primer is activated, fuel is directed through the primer system and into the engine's intake system to enrich the starting mixture.
The valve, cover and gasket at the end of the solenoid are common service points. Age, fuel exposure and repeated operation can eventually cause leakage, poor sealing or difficulty priming the engine.
